Training your dog is essential for their safety and your peace of mind. Here are the fundamental commands every dog should know and how to teach them.

1Sit

The most basic command and foundation for others.

Hold a treat above your dogs nose
Slowly move it back over their head
As they look up, their bottom naturally goes down
Say "sit" the moment they sit
Reward immediately with the treat

2Stay

Teaches impulse control and patience.

Ask your dog to sit
Hold your palm out and say "stay"
Take a small step back
If they stay, return and reward
Gradually increase distance and duration

3Come (Recall)

The most important safety command.

Start in a quiet area with few distractions
Say your dogs name followed by "come"
Use an excited, happy tone
Reward generously when they arrive
Never punish a dog for coming to you

4Down

Useful for calming and impulse control.

Start with your dog in sit position
Hold a treat near their nose
Move it slowly to the ground
As they follow, their body will lower
Say "down" and reward

5Leave It

Prevents them from picking up dangerous items.

Show a treat in your closed hand
Say "leave it" when they sniff or paw
Wait until they back away
Reward from your other hand
